Cyprien-Prudent St. Amant;
he
was the son of Philippe-Isaac St. Amant and Rosalie Clouatre
and born in 1833 at St-Valentin de Napierville, Quebec; he married Marie-Phebe (Phoebe)
Remillard (Alexandre
Remillard & Josephte Goyette) on 12 June
1866 at Farnham, Quebec. Prudent and Phoebe came to Minnesota
about 1868 where they first settled at a village called
Wheatland in Erin Township, Rice County. The 1880 US census
shows that they had 13 acres of improved land and 67 acres of
woodland in Erin Township valued at $500. The St. Amant family
owned one cow, two oxen and four pigs valued at $175. He was
engaged in the milling business operating a grist mill at
Wheatland until it was destroyed by fire during the 1880's. The
loss was a substantial financial setback for Prudent and he was
unable or unwilling to rebuild the facility. In 1883, he became
interested in an area called Eagle Valley in Todd County,
Minnesota near Clarissa. He purchased land there and encouraged
other French-Canadian families to join him however he soon found
that clearing heavy timber from the land was beyond his strength
and his health began to fail rapidly. He later moved to
Minneapolis where he died in February 1896.
